In a night with only a small number of national seats up for grabs, Democrat Bill Owens appears to have won the race for the Democratic party. The results Tuesday night showed Owens with 49% of the vote, conservative candidate Doug Hoffman with 45% of the vote, and Republican Dede Scozzafava attracting 5% of the vote, despite having suspended her campaign days earlier. Despite some news networks calling the race “too close to call.” With many absentee ballets left to be counted, Doug Hoffman nevertheless conceded to Owens to end the race.
In other important national races, The Republican Party recaptured its hold upon the Governorships of Virginia and New Jersey, as Bob McDonnel and Chris Christie won their respective elections. Independent Mike Bloomberg also won his election over Democrat William Thompson Jr.
